Magic
Nyonia is a world filled with magic and wonder. The Elder Races believe that Gods, specifically, Siem - Never-Changing Lord of the Azure Bowl—made it possible for the inhabitants of Nyonia to use magic. The Glauberg mage Ambernaud discovered that an energy is created when the reality where Nyonia exists 'rubs' against another reality, where Nyonia does not exist. Ambernaud's student Malagaw later discovered that Siem gifted each species and/or ethnicity with a specific ability to channel this energy.
- Ainu magic comes in two forms; one is based on crafting runes onto an item, which gives the item magical qualities. The other is based on directly manipulating stone.
- The Wangai first taught the Askum about Peoni - Lady of Industrious Labors and Ripe Harvest and her ways. Many of the Askum started to worship Peoni. Peoni gifted some of Askum with the blessing of her magic.
- Many Elam merchants use magic to improve their ability to trade. Elam magic is closely associated with Halea - Unchaste Mistress of Golden Bargains. Vandicar was an Elam mage who researched how Clean Shop worked and developed two well-known and often quite lethal spells, Vandicar's Hand of Strength and Vandicar's Steel Darts.
- The Glauberg have delved deeply into the true nature of magic. They have perfected their magic into a form called Arcanomancy, which allows them to manipulate magic at the most fundamental level. A typical mage from Glauberg can augment, disrupt, suppress, and potentially steal magic from any other mage on Nyonia. Glauberg mages are also the only mages capable of investing items with magical properties. The process is slow, expensive, and dangerous.
- Almost every Hallstatt merchant uses magic to improve their ability to trade. Hallstatt magic is closely associated with Halea - Unchaste Mistress of Golden Bargains. Other Nyonians view Hallstatt merchants as thieves because they can sell almost anything to anyone. A Hallstatt merchant can also encourage nearly anyone to buy anything at a price they decide.
- The Hammeh have a special connection with Sarajin - Lord of the Icy Wind. He gifts his followers in two distinct and different ways. For some Sarajin - Lord of the Icy Wind gives the gifts of a Shaman. But others, Halea - Unchaste Mistress of Golden Bargains, blesses with the rage of the bear, they become a Berserker.
- The Koori magic allows them to enhance their own natural abilities and manipulate crystals.
- Ligurian magic grew out of their metalworking and the need to create very hot and pure fires. Because Agrik - Warlord of Balgashang is closely associated with fire, some Ligurian mages worship Agrik - Warlord of Balgashang.
- Marius's mage power comes directly from Agrik - Warlord of Balgashang. In some cases, mages worship Agrik, but in other cases, they do not actively worship Agrik. Marius's mages can affect their own fighting abilities and the abilities of the troops that they lead.
- Maurya's mage power comes directly from Larani - Lady of Paladins. In some cases, mages worship Larani, but in other cases, they do not actively worship Larani. Maurya mages can affect their own fighting abilities and the abilities of the troops that they lead.
- The Mehgarth mages can produce potent offensive and defensive magics. Mehgarth mages are part of Kerala's army. (i.e., this is the one kind of mage that players can not play.)
- The Moche are a seafaring people; their magic reflects this way of life. Moche magic is associated with Sarajin - Lord of the Icy Wind. Although Sarajin is most often associated with battle lust, he is also the god who is associated with the seas.
- Nebra has learned how to literally 'bottle' magic. Nebra are alchemists who produce potions and dusts. Many of these items are for sale throughout Nyonia.
- The Olduwan people practiced a form of magic called witchcraft. Witchcraft requires elaborate rituals, materials, and time to manifest the magical effect. Olduwan mages are universally called witches; this term is gender neutral. An Olduwan witch often has a familiar, and usually when they have a familiar, it is a Jhereg. Olduwan witches can enhance each other's spells by working together.
- Samara brought spirit magic with them when they came to Nyonia. Spider Grandmother and Tawa (Samara Creation Story ) gifted Samara with spirit magic so they would survive and thrive on Nyonia. Samara shamans can craft kachina dolls, which represent the spirit the shaman intends to call forth. Some shamans can become one with the kachina and take on the form of the kachina.
- The Strabo are a seafaring people; their magic reflects this way of life. Strabo magic is associated with Sarajin - Lord of the Icy Wind. Although Sarajin is most often associated with battle lust, he is also the god who is associated with the seas.
- The Wangai's magic is a direct gift from Peoni - Lady of Industrious Labors and Ripe Harvest. Almost all Wangai worship Peoni. Wangai magic is intended primarily to help the community survive. The offensive and defensive magic is intended to confuse, befuddle, and constrain enemies.
In a few rare cases, individuals had an affinity for multiple types of magic. Some of these individuals tried to learn each of the different kinds of magic. Every mage who has walked that path has not only destroyed themselves but caused a worldwide cataclysmic event.
Multiple mages who practice different types of magic can combine their efforts without the risk of causing a cataclysmic event.
