Ilvir - Master of Araka-Kalai, created the Gargun when a group of adventurers decided to kill one of Ilvir's unique creatures inside Ilvir's sanctuary. There had been other children of Ilvir who had died over the ages, but those killings had happened outside of Ilvir's sanctuary. In a fit of anger, Ilvir created an abomination, the Gargun.

General Information

Gargun are made up of three sub-races generally referred to as the Parva, Atrox, and Pavor.

Biology

As a created race, Gargun have a unique biology, especially when it comes to reproduction. Gargun communities are organized around a fertile queen and king. When the king impregnates the queen, she lays eggs. Typically, a queen will produce between 5 and 30 eggs a day when she is fertile. There are other female Gargun in a hive, and they appear to be infertile. These eggs, when kept in a warm, damp, and dark place, will gestate for three to six months, at which point they will hatch. Newborn Gargun only take a few hours to mature enough to walk about on their own and to be able to take care of themselves. Gargun are born with a certain amount of "racial memory". In the past, other races on Nyonia believed they had wiped out a Gargun nest only to find out later that some eggs were missed. Within a few years, the Gargun have returned in vast numbers. Gargun are warm-blooded creatures but prefer warmer climates, which is why they are found mostly in the equatorial regions of Nyonia. Gargun only eat meat.

"Society"

Gargun society ranges from nomadic tribes to "towns" that are inhabited and run by Gargun.

Nomadic Gargun

They tend to live in areas that offer multiple cave complexes, allowing them to relocate their queen and eggs when food supplies are scarce. Nomadic Gargun Tribes tend to number between 30 and 100. Most Parva are nomadic. A few live in small villages, with no more than 200 to 300 Gargun. Nomadic Gargun survive by hunting and raiding.

"Civilized"

These Gargun live in villages and towns that can number between 100 and 5000. The Pavor are the rulers of the largest Gargun towns. If there are other Gargun in a Pavor town, they are slaves to the Pavor. Pavor has an elaborate social structure that allows them to grow crops to feed livestock, which is their primary food source. The strongest male in a Gargun community is fertile and is the only one who can mate with the queen. There are other males and females in a community, but they are infertile. They can become fertile, but no one knows how that happens.

Civil War/Swarming

When the population of a Gargun community becomes too large, one of three things will happen. The first possibility is that the king and queen will send a raiding or war party to a nearby community. The second possibility is that a civil war will break out between factions of Gargun within a single community. Usually, this results in a new king and queen, who become fertile.

The last thing that can happen is swarming. Sometimes, some of the strong males, who are infertile, will grab some of the infertile females and leave with their followers to start a new community.

Anything that gets in the way of a Gargun Swarm is likely to be destroyed. Large Gargun Swarms have been known to wipe out well-defended walled towns. The Gargun, without regard for their lives, will 'swarm' over anything that might be a food source or a place to build a new community. Swarms can number in the tens to thousands. The largest recorded swarm consisted of over 10,000 Gargun.

Specific Gargun Sub-races

Parva

The smallest of the Gargun, they tend to be less than 4' tall. Almost all Parva live in nomadic groups. As a general rule, they tend to be the least threatening because they live in small groups. A well-armed peasant can deal with one or two without a problem. A strong show of force will usually force them to retreat. The Parva are sometimes found enslaved by the Pavor.

Atrox

The Atrox are Easterlings-sized Gargun. They tend to be a bit stronger and more rigid than the average Easterlings. They live in villages and small towns. A typical well-armed peasant might be able to defeat an Atrox. The typically equipped town guardsman could defeat one or two Atrox. Atrox communities survive by raising livestock, which they graze on nearby lands. They will raid other communities for foodstuffs and anything else they deem necessary. They also form alliances with various races, notably Fire Elioud and Ghidorah.  When an Atrox swarm, every creature capable of moving quickly will move as far away from the path of the swarm as they can. It has been reported that minutes to an hour before a swarm arrives in an area, wildlife will be stampeding away from the oncoming swarm.

Pavor

The Pavor are larger than the typical Easterlings. They are stronger, tougher, and quicker than the average Easterlings. A typical equipment peasant would not stand a chance against a single Pavor. A well-equipped town guardsman is in for an even fight against a single Pavor. Pavor is well organized and tends not to swarm. Civil wars and large-scale raiding are more likely to occur if the population of the Pavor community gets too large. Pavor communities survive by raising livestock, which they have grazed on nearby lands or from crops they force Parva to raise for them. They will raid other communities for foodstuffs and anything else they deem necessary. They also form alliances with various races, notably Fire Elioud and Ghidorah. They are even willing to trade with Easterlings. If a Pavor swarm, every creature capable of moving quickly will move away from the path of the swarm. It has been reported that minutes to an hour before a swarm arrives in an area, wildlife will be stampeding away from the oncoming swarm.
